Recently I have been working on draft to a new criminal law in Denmark. Today we have a lower legal limit of 15 years and no juvenile system. It means that children can end up in adult prison and often children down to the age of 12 are put in the same detentions as adults until the parents can arrive. This is not acceptable.

Also not acceptable is that youth gangs speculate in using the youngest children to do the most severe crimes because they can not be punished.

Therefore a separate juvenile system has to be created. As system that can accommodate children down to about an age of 10. A system that only use confinement as a last resort and only for a short period. A system that should be able to use community service to settle all debts to society.

In my research, I studied the approach made in other countries. It was both a shocking and disturbing research. Children are generally abused and mistreated. Even children that had not broken any law but only misbehaved or rebelled, are shipped of to boot camps or behaviour modifications systems some even not in their own country.

All parents want the best for their children and sometime they would correct a non-existing problem with a cure that means destruction of the child instead.

Children dies there and quite often they do not return in a condition, which makes them able to live in a modern society any more. They react with a kind of Stockholm syndrome combined with a robot like behaviour and seems endless grateful towards their parents.

A lot of these programs have been shut down in the last 5 years. The state of Florida has stopped the use of boot camps as a concept because a child’s endless beating for 9 minutes just 2 hours after he arrived at the camp ended in his death. This event was caught on a video camera and pressed the local government into action.

But there are still a lot of these camps into action and children continue to die. Alone in the United States about 5 children had lost their life in the last 4 months. They seem to have targeted Europe as their new market. A WWASP place has already been shot down in the Czech Republic. Another camp for Swiss children was discovered in Spain. It is time for our politicians to stop them before they get settle.

Once again it have been proved without a doubt that we in Denmark have to go our own way in order to achieve a perfect system.
